For Cod’s Sake

For Cod’s Sake is part of Folke Rydén’s long-running Baltic Sea Media Project and offers an in-depth investigation into the dramatic decline — and uncertain recovery — of the Baltic Sea cod. Over two pivotal years, the team followed fishermen, scientists, policymakers and EU officials to uncover how decades of well-intended decisions contributed to the near-collapse of one of the region’s most important fish stocks. Just as environmental conditions unexpectedly create the possibility of a historic cod comeback, EU regulations require fishermen to discard thousands of dead cod every day — a contradiction that fuels anger on the docks and disagreement among scientists advising the EU. Is the cod actually recovering, or is another collapse just ahead? I worked on the production as the photographer filming scenes in Scandinavia, Germany, Belgium and Canada, and contributed to the editing process when not on location. The film has been screened internationally and remains a core piece of reporting on the ecological and political challenges facing the Baltic Sea, highlighting that without cod, the entire ecosystem — and the livelihoods connected to it — risks falling out of balance.
