Away from the wave
In summer 2005 I commenced a work experience placement at Folke Rydén Production AB, where I took on the role of Editing Assistant for Away From the Wave (Original title: Vägen från Vågen). The 58-minute documentary, directed by Folke Rydén, opens with the horrifying moment in Khao Lak on 26 December 2004, when the sea receded and a massive wave crashed ashore, captured on a family’s camcorder. It then shifts into the deeply personal stories of Thai and Swedish survivors, each caught up in the wave of tragedy and yet united in their search for renewal, understanding and connection across cultures.
The film is a moving account of grief and hope, emphasizing not only sorrow but the bonds that arose in the aftermath. It was commissioned for television broadcast on SVT and YLE, and had a presence at several film festivals, offering a platform for voices affected by the disaster. My work in the editing suite helped support the storytelling, pacing and emotional impact of the final piece.
