Dirty Waters

Premiering in May 2011, the second documentary in the Baltic Sea series continues the work begun with For Cod’s Sake, this time turning its full focus to the sea’s broader ecological collapse. Algae blooms, hypoxia and dead sea beds have become familiar symptoms, caused by decades of agricultural runoff, industrial pollution and insufficient wastewater treatment. Holiday-makers see slimy algae as an inconvenience — but the film demonstrates that the underlying crisis is far more serious, and in some respects far less understood. The documentary explains the Baltic Sea’s complex environmental state for the public for the first time in a clear and accessible way. It examines the science behind the suffocated seabeds, investigates the political forces shaping the region’s environmental policies, and presents possible solutions through interviews with experts and the politicians responsible. On this production, I worked as Postproduction Producer, Editor and Camera, helping shape the film’s structure, visual storytelling and on-location sequences. As the follow-up to the award-winning For Cod’s Sake, this film deepens the series’ mission to reveal what is at stake for the Baltic region’s future.
