The Tsunami Generation
The second film I worked on at Folke Rydén Production AB was Generation Tsunami, where I served as Editing Assistant while also assisting on location during several shooting days in Stockholm. Directed by Folke Rydén and running 58 minutes, the documentary follows survivors in Aceh, northern Sumatra — a region long marked by isolation, religious tension and conflict between the GAM guerrilla movement and the Indonesian government.
Through intimate and compelling stories, the film shows how the year after the devastating 2004 tsunami became almost as turbulent as the wave itself. Families who lost everything navigate displacement, grief, political unrest and the search for a place to call home. They are the “tsunami generation”: people carrying immense trauma yet still holding onto a fragile sense of hope as they work to rebuild their lives.
Generation Tsunami was broadcast widely across Europe, including on SVT, ZDF/ARTE, YLE, DR, NRK, RÚV, RTBF, BiH and ETV, and was screened at multiple film festivals. The film received the Red Cross Film Festival award, won a Hugo Award at the Chicago International Film Festival, and earned a nomination for Kristallen, the Swedish TV Awards. My work in postproduction contributed to shaping the narrative and emotional structure of the final film.
