Up North
June 2019 marked a turning point for Europe. Record temperatures swept across France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. Wildfires raged in Russia. Ice caps from Greenland to Finland melted at unprecedented rates, making it the hottest June recorded since measurements began in 1880.
This production explores how climate change is no longer a distant threat but a present reality for Europe. Scientists warn that heatwaves will become more frequent and more intense, challenging long-held assumptions that northern regions would be spared. The film asks what can still be done to slow the warming, whether regional emissions policies are sufficient, and how life in one of the world’s most stable and affluent regions will change. It also examines the social costs, new risks, and sacrifices ordinary people may be forced to face.
I served as Sweden producer for this project, working closely with the producer/director team from Spain. The collaboration proved highly successful, leading to continued cooperation on several subsequent productions.
